Profile corrections of the chin or cheekbones

An optimum appearance is characterized by harmonious proportions and contours as well as an attractive profile. Improvements to the proportions of the face can often be achieved by altering the profile, whether by reducing or building up cheekbones, the lower edge of the jaw or the chin.

In addition to the nose, the region of the cheeks and chin play a decisive role in facial expression. A small, «receding chin» makes the expression appear «weak» and is often felt to be a problem.

In the course of consultation we use a computer simulation, which allows the patient to see a very graphic image of the possible results beforehand. Together with the patient the corrections are analyzed on the screen and any changes simulated and discussed. This makes the decision about an operation easier and guarantees greater precision in carrying out the treatment.

 

Alterations to the profile require particularly detailed consultation and planning, as no average norms or templates for an operation can be used. 

In profile correction it is crucial that an individual analysis of appearance is carried out, a clear objective is defined and the right shape and size of implant is selected. To achieve this, the bony structure of the face including the position of the jaw must be closely examined using X-rays. If, in addition to an externally visible misalignment of the jaw, a misalignment of the teeth is identified, combined treatment with orthodontic intervention produces better results. In such cases we involve an orthodontist, with whom we then plan a joint intervention.

 

 

Profile corrections are carried out under twilight sedation or under general anesthetic. Operating inside the mouth, small incisions are made in the fold of the upper or lower lip, in order to expose the bones of the chin or cheek. This enables the implant to be inserted without any problem. To build up structures, we prefer Goretex implants, which are extremely well tolerated and, after healing, are felt to be completely natural. The incisions are sutured using absorbable thread, eliminating the need to remove sutures later. This operation leaves absolutely no externally visible scars. No bandages are required.

Immediately after the operation intensive cooling reduces swelling or discoloration to a minimum. Pain is not to be anticipated.

Patients only need to stay for a few hours in the clinic, or for one night, if preferred. Strenuous activities and high temperatures should be avoided in the week following the operation, as these delay the final disappearance of swelling.

As an alterative to correcting a profile operatively using a Goretex implant, hyaluronic acid can also be used to alter the profile. A special hyaluronic acid preparation is available which can simply be injected into the area as required. The results last for about 18 months.
