After his University Entrance Diploma (Abitur),
Dr. Dr. Muggenthaler studied medicine and dentistry in Freiburg, Mailand, Ulm and Frankfurt.
In Frankfurt, under the guidance of his supervisory professor, Prof. Lemperle, he investigated the effects of tissue stretching by skin expanders and, under  Prof. Frenkel, the significance of antibiotic prophylaxis following surgical interventions.   

From 1988 to 1992 Dr. Dr. Muggenthaler was an scientific assistant at the Clinic for Maxillo-facial Surgery in Düsseldorf, qualifying as a specialist in maxillo-facial surgery. He then took up a post as Senior Surgeon at Josefs Hospital in Krefeld, where Dr. Muggenthaler gained an additional qualification in «Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery».

Throughout his training, Dr. Dr. Muggenthaler made full use of the wide variety of opportunities to visit and train with experts in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery and plastic facial surgery, both as a guest and as an assistant. In 1995 Dr. Muggenthaler completed a six-month fellowship with Prof. Bruce Connell in Los Angeles and Prof. Robert Flowers in Honolulu (Hawaii), gaining expertise in the fine points of aesthetic plastic surgery of the face.

Subsequentliy Dr. Dr. Muggenthaler opened a private practice in Freiburg im Breisgau. Since 2006 Dr. Dr. Muggenthaler has also operated his own private practice in Basel.
