Beauty Check – the basic principles

The Golden Ratio

Certain proportions are particularly pleasing to the eye. Back in ancient times already, scientists examined this phenomenon and discovered the factor phi=1.62, also referred to as the «Golden Ratio» . If a line is divided by this factor into two sections of differing lengths, the shorter relates to the longer line in the same proportion as the longer to the line as a whole. This mathematical relationship describes a certain harmony in the relation of differing sizes to each other.

Interestingly the proportions of the face considered to be beautiful also follow the rules of the golden ratio. Dividing the distance from the hairline to the chin by phi gives the position of the pupils, dividing once again gives the tip of the nose and then the front line of the teeth.  The width of the face, measured from the cheekbones, corresponds to 1.62nd of the height of the face.  Claudia Schiffer, Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve – they all have faces subdivided according to the golden ratio.
